What are Solar panels?

Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels convert the sunlight into electricity. They are the most popular and environmentally friendly way to generate your own power.

You can think of a solar panel as a group of cells operating together to capture sunlight. The PV cell itself, in its most common form is made almost entirely from silicon. It has no moving parts and can therefore operate for an indefinite period without wearing out. And its output is electricity, which is likely the most practical and valuable form of energy.
What happens when light hits the solar panel?

Light can be considered to consist of a stream of tiny particles of energy, called photons. When the photons from Sunlight hits the solar panels they can transfer their energy to some of the electrons in the material, so “promoting” them to a higher energy level. In other words, the cells absorb the photons and convert their energy into electricity. This process is known as the photovoltaic effect, which is why they are called photovoltaic panels.

The electricity generated by the solar panels can then be used to power various things, like lights, appliances, and even electric vehicles. It's like having a tiny power station on your roof or in your backyard that runs on sunlight!

How do Solar PV Panels Work?

Are you looking to install solar PV on your residential or commercial property but not sure how it works?

We don’t want to give you lots of complicated technical information that will be of no benefit for you. We want to make everything very simple and comprehensive for you. This is the solar process explained in a few steps.

1. The Sun

Once the Sunlight reaches the solar panels they will start absorbing sunlight with the photovoltaic cells. The panels convert the energy to direct current (DC) energy that passes through an inverter.

5. The Grid

You can feed back into the grid any electricity that you don’t use. Under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) you will be paid for every unit of electricity that you feed back. ( Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, 2020)

2. The Inverter

Here is where the inversion will happen. The inverter will convert the DC Energy to alternating current (AC) energy.

4. The Battery

If you choose to install a solar battery bank with your solar energy system, you can store excess power for use long after the sun goes down.

3. Power Up

The converted AC energy then flows from the inverter into your electrical system to power any electrical appliances in your home.

What Are the Benefits of Solar Panels?

If you have to design the ideal energy conversion system, you would probably find it difficult to come up with something better than the solar photovoltaic (PV) panel. The solar panel is a device which harnesses an energy source that is by far the most abundant of those available on the planet. Here are several advantages associated with solar (PV) panels:

Renewable Energy: Solar panels convert solar energy directly into electricity using only the power of the sun, which is a sustainable and renewable energy source. As long as the sun continuous to shine, we have an endless supply of sunlight. This guarantees an uninterrupted production of electricity without exhaustion or running out.

Environmentally Friendly: Solar panels don't produce any harmful greenhouse gases or pollution when generating electricity. Using solar power helps reduce our carbon footprint and helps combat climate change.

Off-Grid Possibilities: Solar panels are valuable in distant rural areas or places lacking access to electricity grids or experiencing frequent power interruptions. They offer a solution for people to have power in places where traditional electricity may not be available.

Saving Money: Once you have solar panels installed, you can start generating your own electricity for free using sunlight. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels can indeed save you money by significantly reducing your electricity bill, sometimes up to 50%, depending on your energy consumption and the capacity of your solar system. Moreover, in certain regions, you may have the opportunity to earn money by selling excess electricity back to the grid, which is known as net metering or feed-in tariffs.

Long-Lasting: The majority of modern solar panels are designed to be durable and reliable, with an expected lifespan of around 25 to 30 years or even longer. Many solar panel manufacturers offer warranties that cover their performance for a specified period, providing further assurance of their long-lasting capabilities.

How does Energy Storage Work?

Once you have installed your solar panels or a heat pump, you might consider battery storage where you will be able to store your excess solar energy and use it when the sun goes down.

1. SUNLIGHT reaches the solar panels. The Solar panels absorb sunlight with photovoltaic cells. The panels convert the energy to direct current (DC) energy that passes through an inverter.

2. The INVERTER will convert the DC Energy to alternating current (AC) energy which can be used in your home.

3.  All the excess energy generated by the solar panels will be stored in the BATTERY and can be used as soon as you need it.

4. The battery could provide back up POWER in case of a power cut or to a dedicated off-grid load.

How much could I save with solar panels?

Are solar panels a cost-effective solution? Will they save me money? Can they lead to significant savings in the long run? These are some of the burning questions that people often ask themselves when considering investing in solar power.

The potential savings from solar panels can vary depending on factors such as location, energy consumption, the size of the solar panel system, and the cost of electricity. The savings shown are based on the following assumptions:

  • 3,500 kWh of annual usage
  • Electricity price of £0.33/kWh
  • Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff rate of £0.15/kWh
  • Standing Charge £0.41 / day
  • Terraced property
  • South-facing roof

Domestic Design – Solar PV Systems for Homes

In most countries the grid electricity is easily accessible as a convenient backup to Photovoltaic (PV) system or other fluctuating renewable energy supplies. The grid has the capacity to absorb excess power generated by the PV system, especially during times of surplus energy, like sunny summer afternoons. This surplus power can be distributed to other customers, thus reducing the reliance on conventional energy generation methods. Moreover, at night or on cloudy days, when the output of the solar PV panels is insufficient, the grid can provide backup energy from conventional sources.

What Solar PV panels should I get for my home?

When determining what solar panels to get for your house, consider the following steps:

Energy Needs: Determine how much electricity you want your solar panels to produce. This depends on your current energy consumption, which can be found on your electricity bills. Consider any potential changes in energy usage in the future.

Roof Space and Orientation: When you plan to install solar panels is important to assess the available roof space. Factors such as shading, the slope, size and orientation of your roof will influence the number and type of panels you can install and will affect the solar potential of your home.

Budget: Consider your budget for the solar panel installation. Different panels come with varying costs, and you'll need to find a balance between the upfront investment and the long-term savings on your energy bills. To help you decide whether a solar PV system is suitable for your needs, we will provide you with Free Performance Estimate. Should I get Battery Storage for my solar PV System?

It is great that you have either already installed or decided to install solar panels. It would be even better if you connect your panels to a battery and store your own electricity until you are ready to use it.

Solar panels produce electricity when exposed to sunlight, but as we know, this process is not constant and depends on factors such as weather conditions and time of day. The battery storage captures and retains the excess energy when solar panels generate electricity. The battery can then discharge the stored energy when the solar panels are not generating electricity, such as during the evening or during power cuts. With Solar energy storage you will be able to store the excess solar energy generated by solar panels during the day for later use, you can use this energy to power appliances, lighting, and other electrical devices in the home or building.

Battery storage systems are typically connected to the solar panel system and the electrical grid. They can be designed to work in combination with the grid, allowing for a smooth and continuous transition between solar power, battery power, and grid power as needed.

Our team of experts will establish the optimal way to integrate a Solar PV and energy storage into your household. We can assist you in identifying precisely how this technology can be utilized to benefit your house or commercial property. By integrating battery storage into your solar PV system you will maximize your self-consumption of solar energy, reduce dependence on the grid, and have a backup power supply during outages.

Commercial Design – PV Systems for Non-domestic Buildings

PV arrays can also be integrated into the roofs of commercial, institutional and industrial buildings, replacing some of the conventional roofing materials that would otherwise have been needed and reducing the net cost of the PV system.
Commercial and industrial buildings are normally occupied mainly during daylight hours, which correlates well with the availability of solar radiation. Therefore, the power generated by the Solar PV panels can significantly reduce a company’s need to purchase power from the grid at the “retail” price. The excess power is usually sold to the grid at a lower “wholesale” price, so it is economically beneficial to use as much PV power as possible on-site rather than selling it to the grid.

We can help you to transform your business space into an energy-efficient powerhouse with our commercial Solar PV design and installation services. Our team of experts can assist in conducting a thorough analysis of your site, drawing up plans, and executing the installation of solar panel systems.

The first phase of the process includes conducting a site analysis (survey) to determine the feasibility of solar installation. After assessing your energy needs and consumption patterns, we will design a solar PV system that meets the specific requirements of the commercial establishment. We always consider factors such as available roof space, sun exposure, shading, and electrical requirements. Our highly skilled technical team will design a tailored solar system that meets your businesses’ needs.

The installation phase will involve mounting solar panels on rooftops or other suitable areas, connecting them to inverters and electrical systems, and ensuring the safe and efficient integration of the solar PV system with the existing electrical infrastructure of the building. The whole process will be fully compliant with the local building regulations and safety standards.

Our team of experienced professionals with expertise in solar energy and electrical systems will carry out the installation to ensure optimal performance, durability, and long-term reliability.  of the commercial solar PV system.

What are the benefits of installing commercial solar PV system for business?

COST SAVINGS: By generating your own electricity from solar energy, you can significantly reduce your energy bills. Commercial solar PV systems provide a long-term source of clean and renewable energy.

On average, a well-designed and efficiently installed commercial solar PV system can generate up to 1,000 kWh per year per installed kilowatt (kWp) capacity.

This is an example of the significant savings a leisure centre can enjoy by implementing 132 kWp Solar photovoltaic (PV) system. We can assume that the annual electricity generation from solar PV system will be 116,000 kWh. In this case, the lifetime bill savings are £3,828,676.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI): By investing in a commercial solar PV system your business can gain substantial returns. In some cases, it is often possible to achieve a reduction in grid consumption of over 50% and obviously a similar reduction in cost. An added benefit of this reduction in cost is a very short payback period of all the equipment of possibly less than three years. The energy savings generated by the system, along with potential incentives and government schemes, can contribute even more.

If we were to consider the Leisure centre as an exemplar once more, it's projected payback period would be approximately 17 months or 1 year and 5 months.
